About Me
Kristen McClintock LMHC CMHS
Are you tired of sticker charts and time-outs?
Ever feel like these behavior-based ways of parenting seem to leave you and your child frustrated, alone, and involved in a seemingly never-ending power struggle?
What if I told you there’s another way? A way that feels more instinctual, loving, and dare I say…fun? And best of all, it’s backed by neuroscience!
I’ve worked with children and families for over 15 years in the Olympia community. I had been trained in all the evidence based models for child behavior modification. But then I became a parent… and suddenly those '“behavior modification techniques” either didn’t work or felt downright awful. I found myself wondering,” isn’t there a better way? A way that leads with connection, love, and humor rather than simply trying to change my child’s behavior? After all, isn’t all behavior communication?”
Parents don’t want to change behavior, they want a happy, healthy child. Children don’t want to “be bad” they want to do the right thing.
My practice became enhanced when I became a parent. I have always approached children with respect, compassion, and curiosity. But I’ve developed a deeper understanding of children and their parents. Parents don’t want to change behavior, they want a happy, healthy child. Children don’t want to “be bad” they want to do the right thing. If a child’s behavior is getting in the way of them being able to connect, express love, or grow, then they are struggling. It is in those moments of struggle that they are in desperate need of connection and co-regulation.
If you are finding that time-outs, punishment based discipline, or reward based discipline aren’t working for you or your child I would love to meet with you and see if we can develop a way to approach your child that feels consistent with your values and helps your child feel loved in their darkest moments.
